Hurricanes golfers on hunt for national championship in Quebec

Justin Shanks, Eric Locke, Brett Wilson, Mathieu Arseneault and Neal Ryan.The Holland Hurricanes varsity golfers are in Quebec City this week for the 2013 CCAA PING National Golf Championships at the Royal Quebec Golf Club, hosted by the St. Lawrence Lions. The event welcomes the top golfers from the Canadian Collegiate Athletics Association member schools. The Hurricanes and St. Thomas Tommies are the two entrants from the ACAA.

The Hurricanes arrived on Sunday evening and have spent Monday and Tuesday preparing for the event through practice rounds and time spent on the practice range. The first round kicks off on Wednesday. The event is a three round tournament.

The Hurricanes are represented by Eric Locke (Digby, Nova Scotia), Mathieu Arseneault (Campbellton, New Brunswick), Neal Ryan (Antigonish, Nova Scotia), Brett Wilson and Justin Shanks (Sussex, New Brunswick) on the men’s side. On the women’s side Tariqah Walikraam (Bermuda) is entered as an individual for the Hurricanes.

In last year’s event, the men’s Hurricanes finished in sixth place in the team competition while Eric Locke led the way, finishing in sixteenth position in the individual championship. Walikraam finished in seventh place in the women’s individual competition.

The Hurricanes have their eyes on a higher finish this year entering the event seeded in second place in the men’s national rankings, the ‘Canes have also had a spring and summer of good performances to build off of.

In May the men’s Hurricanes made the cut for the first time at the Golf Canada national championships when they competed against the top universities and colleges in the country. The team finished in eighth position in the event highlighted by Eric Locke’s fifth place finish as an individual. After record setting performances in the teams seven round qualifier, and a perfect three-for-three in ACAA tournament and individual victories, the team is ready to go with arguably the strongest roster in the programs history.

And canadians can claim football, they played

The game before Americans knew it existed and it was introduced to them by Canada, they did however change some of the rules, so that is up for debate on who really invented football.
Some claims the football is truly a Canadian game and it was a Canadian who invented football. Invented by the replacement for British troops entering Quebec in the 1600's. Canadian Universities then introduced the game to American Colleges. It is said that by the time America first heard of football, Canada already has their professional football league of sorts.
